Socialists, Occupiers in New Zealand assault US Consulate with shoes, remove US flag and replace with Palestinian flag

The Socialist Aotearoa group organized a march, including members of Occupy Auckland & Occupy New Zealand, and moved on the US Consulate in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday. Claiming to be part of a “Global Peace and Justice Solidarity with Gaza March”, they shouted such chants as “Free Palestine” and threw shoes at the Consulate, a sign of disrespect in the Arab world.

They also replaced the US flag that flew over the Consulate with a Palestinian flag.

See picture of US flag normally there (partially obscured by tree):

Speeches and signs indicated a desire to tear up the Camp David accords and move the Egyptian army into Gaza to fight Israel.

One might ask where police and US security at the Consulate were in all this? Apparently, we are still not adequately protecting our embassies and consulates, even after the Benghazi scandal and terrorist attack which resulted in the death of four Americans including the American ambassador, J. Christopher Stevens.

Syrian Army News: Hurricane Sandy was an attack by “heroic Iranian regime”

Fox News Channel’s Grapevine reported here on the following post from the Syrian Army News.

There’s a new explanation for why superstorm Sandy happened coming from Syria.

Syrian Army News posted this. Quote — “Sources confirm that Hurricane Sandy, now buffeting the U.S., was carried out by highly advanced technology developed by the heroic Iranian regime, in coordination with our resistant regime. This is a consequence of attacking Assad’s Syria and threatening its security.”

Last month, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the West for destroying his country’s rain clouds to force a drought.

“Anonymous” group claims to have planted a bomb in a government building to blow up on November 5th (Updated)

Here is the statement that they released.  which reads as follows:

Dear citizens of the world,
We are anonymous. As of today 200 kilograms of composite Nitroglycerin and commercial explosives have effectively been concealed in a government building, situated in the united states of America. on the 5th of November 2012 the device will detonate remotely via the transmission control protocol, leaving behind severe consiquences[sic]. We would like to advise that the contraption is built inside a tamper proof apparatus sensitive to physical intrusions or attempted disarmament, thus resulting in the desired effect, if the military grade device is found before the 5th of November. there is no intention, risks or circumstances what so ever to cause harm to innocent people, but we can not, say the same for the people who are the real terrorists, oppressors and war creators.
we are anonymous
we are legion
we do not forget
we do not forgive
on the 5th of November, you will expect us.

The release says it is from the group “@FawkesSecurity” and references “#OpV” which refers to the actions planned for November 5th (which harkens back to V for Vendetta and Guy Fawkes Day). Other videos and statements from other Anonymous accounts have called for actions in the streets on that day to help bring down the government.

Since the video hit yesterday, many in Anonymous have denounced it, asserting that they would not employ such tactics. Speculation about @FawkesSecurity ranges from “false flag” and “fed”, to “attention whore”.  The Youtube account is not one of the main Anonymous accounts, although it is connected to a bigger channel.

@FawkesSecurity appears to have been on the Anonymous scene since at least the end of last year. The twitter profile lists a Facebook to a private group, with the administrator supposedly a blonde woman from New York named “Jodie Rushforth”, which is likely false. There are several others listed in the grouping as well.

This group has claimed involvement in attacks on HSBC and on Twitter last week over the suspension of the account @Anon_Central. Other Anons are now disputing these claims.

The nature of Anonymous allows anyone to effectively claim to be a part of it. Yet this is not the first threat claiming to come from an Anonymous source. In February, for example, The Anon Message released a video, declaring war on the United States and calling for the destruction of the government, specifically noting this was not calling for a “protest” but a “call to arms”, again referencing #OpV and November 5th. That video has over 400,000 views.

Mother of slain State Dept official told attack was about the video, wants answers

The mother of slain State Department official Sean Smith appeared on CNN begging for answers, asking what happened to her son in Benghazi.

She says all the officials she met with told her the attack was about the anti-Islam video and that she still is not sure what happened to her son or how he died.

COOPER: So you don’t even know the cause of death?

SMITH: I don’t even know if that’s true or not. No, I don’t. I don’t know where. I look at TV and I see bloody hand prints on walls, thinking, my God, is that my son’s? I don’t know if he was shot. I don’t know — I don’t know. They haven’t told me anything. They are still studying it. And the things that they are telling me are just outright lies.

That Susan Rice, what — she talked to me personally and she said, she said, this is the way it was. It was — it was because of this film that came out.

COOPER: So she told you personally that she thought it was a result of that video of the protest?

SMITH: Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. In fact all of them did. All of them did. Leon Panetta actually took my face in his hands like this and he said, trust me. I will tell you what happened. And so far, he’s told me nothing. Nothing at all. And I want to know.

Al Qaeda video of earlier attack on US Consulate in Benghazi on June 6, 2012

Prior to the September 11, 2012 attack on the US Consulate in Benghazi, in which four Americans were killed, there were two other bombings at the consulate, one on April 6 (when two former security guards hurled improvised explosives at the building) and another on June 6. See more on the threats and subsequent investigation here.

This video  purports to show some of the attack on June 6.  The video was discovered by the SITE Intelligence Group, an organization which monitors online terrorist activity.

The video was released by the “Brigades of the Imprisoned Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman” which takes responsibility for the attack.  According to SITE, the Brigades group reported in a communiqué posted on jihadist forums on June 11 that its fighters planted an explosive in the wall of the consulate, the blasting of which injured a number of guards (official accounts do not include any injuries).   The jihadist group added that the attack came in response to the drone strike on al-Qaeda official Abu Yahya al-Libi in North Waziristan, and also in response to American drones flying in Libyan skies.  The Wall St. Journal reported last month that this explosion blew a hole through the perimeter barrier of the consulate, one source noting the resultant crater was so big that “40 men could walk through it”.  An Obama administration official characterized this attack as “mild”, compared to that of 9/11/12.  The official said that on 9/11,  “We faced a coordinated, military-style assault.  We’ve never seen that kind of attack before,” this official added.

The attack on June 6th followed the June 5th announcement by the  US of  al-Libi’s death, claiming  his death as a “major blow” to Al Qaeda.

The video begins with a canned clip of Osama Bin Laden speaking, then follows with a speaker from “as-Sahab”, the PR arm of Al Qaeda.  There is then a short clip of the alleged explosion being set off, followed by the leader of Al Qaeda, Ayman Al Zawahiri, haranguing the United States, referencing September 11, 2001 and the attack on the World Trade Center.

The June 6th attack specifically references the drone strike on al-Libi in Pakistan. Al-Libi was from Libya and it has been speculated the September 11 attack in Benghazi may have been further revenge for his death, as well as marking the anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001. Al Qaeda acknowledged al-Libi’s death when they released a eulogy for him on September 10th.

What is also of note is the reference to the “Brigades of the Imprisoned Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman”.  The Sheikh is Egyptian, and part of the reason for the “protest” in Egypt on September 11, 2012  was to agitate for his release from the US to Egypt.  He is being held in a prison in North Carolina, after conviction for plotting the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 and has become a focus of such groups as Al Qaeda. There had also been speculation that President Obama was in negotiations to send him back to Egypt.  One of the people agitating for his release was the brother of Ayman al Zawahiri,  Mohammed al Zawahiri, one of the organizers of the “protest” on September 11, in Egypt, according to the Weekly Standard.

The ongoing investigation into the Benghazi attack- “capabilities in place” to retaliate, “hold up is in Washington”

US Consulate in Benghazi on fire.

Asharq Al-Awsat, an international Arabic daily based in London, has provided a little more of a window into the investigation than MSM has been providing in the United States.  The daily describes some of the suspects and their connection to Al Qaeda.

Asharq Al-Awsat  noted:

-sources close to the FBI investigation into the attack also informed Asharq Al-Awsat that primary evidence in the case has been lost or compromised after the Libyan authorities failed to secure the scene of the crime over a period of two weeks.

-Libyan authorities arrested 8 suspects in connection with the attack

-The FBI team is reportedly made up of between 20 and 25 agents, in addition to around 10 “Delta Force” soldiers providing security.

-Sources close to the FBI investigation into the Benghazi attack informed Asharq Al-Awsat that this is focusing on three suspects with alleged ties to the Al Qaeda terrorist  network.

The first of the three suspects is known as “Juma”, a resident of the Libyan port city of Derna. He is reportedly a leading member of the Libyan Islamist “Ansar al-Sharia” militia that advocates the implementation of Islamic Sharia law across the country. This suspect is also reportedly a former detainee of Guantanamo Bay and is believed to have tried to contact Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. He disappeared from Derna just days after the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi.

The second suspect is known as “Bu Kitf”, a former inmate of Gaddafi’s prisons and a leading member of the “17 February” battalion, which was responsible for providing security to the US consulate.

The third suspect is known as “Abu Ahmed”, also a former prison inmate released following the Egyptian revolution and the ouster of the Mubarak regime. The Americans believe that the Egyptian national sent a message to Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri last July asking permission to form an Al Qaeda branch in Egypt.

-The source also revealed that the Egyptian authorities had failed to provide any information or cooperation with the Americans regarding this suspect. The Egyptian authorities failed to respond to an Asharq Al-Awsat request for comment on this issue.

-Barak Barfi, research fellow at the New America Foundation, stressed that “there was a significant failure in American security.” He added “I think that the Americans believe that Abu Ahmed is responsible for the explosion at the Benghazi consulate…with the participation of Libyans from the Ansar al-Sharia group.”

The three suspects mentioned in detail by Asharq Al-Awsat do not appear to have been part of the eight arrested in Libya.  The US State Department has identified Yemen based Ansar al-Sharia as an alternative name for Al Qaeda operating in the Arabian Peninsula.

Two suspects were also arrested trying to enter Turkey last week.  The suspects, identified as Tunisians, were detained late Wednesday as they attempted to enter the country with fake passports, Kanal D said.

Meanwhile, testimony continued this week before Congress on the circumstances leading up to the attack.

According to CBS News,  a State Department officer told House Committee panel members there were 13 separate specific threats made against the consulate during the six months before the attack. Those threats included a threat against both the Consulate and Ambassador Stevens made on Facebook. One post included mention of the route which Stevens took to jog each morning.

There were also two separate bombings on the consulate - one on April 6 (when two former security guards hurled improvised explosives at the building) and another on June 6.

Lt. Col. Andrew Wood told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that U.S. security was so weak that in April, only one U.S. diplomatic security agent was stationed in Benghazi.  Security Officer Eric Nordstrom also told committee members that repeated requests had been made for increased security, requests that were denied. He said his requests for more security were blocked by a department policy to “normalize operations and reduce security resources.” He stated that Charlene Lamb, the deputy assistant secretary for international programs, wanted to keep the number of U.S. security personnel in Benghazi “artificially low”.

It has been over a month since the attack, yet there has been no response as yet from the United States.

Three U.S. officials told The Daily Beast that the U.S. military has the special-operations forces and other assets in place to begin going after individuals in Libya.

“At this point, the capabilities are in place,” one U.S. intelligence officer said. “The holdup is in Washington.”

Code Pink: “We want to be loved as Americans”

Around 30 members of Code Pink and Veterans for Peace traveled to Pakistan to  allegedly protest drone use by the US in the area. They were trying to join locals in a protest in South Waziristan.

Anyone see Jane Fonda analogies when you look at this? If you can’t make it through the whole going to a foreign country and speaking against our government thing, skip ahead to Medea Benjamin at around 2:50 where she says, “We want to be loved as Americans”.   Because all that is needed for everyone to love us is for us just to love everyone.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for them) the government wouldn’t let them into South Waziristan.

The Taliban were there hoping to show them lots of love, threatening to bomb the protest:

On Saturday, a statement from a Taliban faction said to be based in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province warned that militants would welcome the protesters with suicide bombings.

“We ask the brave people of Waziristan not to side with the gang of Jews and Christians – otherwise their fate will be terrible,” the Punjabi Taliban said in the statement.

My guess is that Medea Benjamin’s expressions of love really wouldn’t have stopped the Taliban from blowing her up.

Oops, at least one Occupier DID meet with Ahmadinejad.

Citizen Journalist ran a piece three days ago on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad allegedly planning a meeting with Occupy members during the time he is in NYC to speak at the United Nations.

The announcement, which was met by revulsion, even from some supporters of OWS, pushed some in OWS to take to the media to denounce it.  ”Nobody in their right mind would meet with a fascist dictator like Ahmadenijad,” said Shawn Carrié, a longtime Occupy activist, in a direct message to Rosie Gray at Buzz Feed.

According to NY Magazine,  another spokesperson also denied it.  ”No, none,” said Occupy Wall Street spokesperson Dana Balicki when asked by Daily Intel if there was any truth to the report. However, Ms. Balicki noted Code Pink members had previously met with Ahmadinejad. Code Pink is one of the founding groups of Occupy.

I was working with the group CODEPINK several years ago when Ahmadinejad came to [New York] and held a meeting to discuss global issues. I imagine this is the same. We have no idea who is organizing the meeting and how they came up with this story.

I’ve been trying to reach someone from Fars to ask them who they are talking about. Anyone going is doing so as an individual,” Balicki said. “There is no organized effort on behalf of OWS to meet with Ahmadinejad. This smells like a propaganda effort to me.

Except now we know at least one of the people that actually met with him was in fact an Occupier from Occupy DC, again according to Fars.  Occupier Leah Bolger is also president of Veterans for Peace, one of the groups in the left anti-war coalition which also includes Code Pink. When queried for confirmation of the meeting, Ms. Bolger failed to respond.

Here is Leah with Occupy DC on Day 4 of their occupation

Fars printed a long statement from Ms. Bolger, speaking on behalf of Veterans for Peace, which basically translates to Israel and US want war, Iran is just an innocent.  Of course, meeting with these people only serves Ahmadinejad. It is too bad they fail to realize they are just propaganda bait.

Apparently Mr. Carrié will have to have a conversation with Leah Bolger about the state of her mind.

Mr. Carrie may have to wait before talking with Leah Bolger. She is off to Pakistan with others of Veterans for Peace and Code Pink to protest drones.  If one protests US use of drones, the logical place to protest would be here, as both groups have done.  There is no reason to go to Pakistan other than being a propaganda puppet.

Welcome to our site, Iranian state media- “Press TV”

Please steal this picture, Press TV. Credit NYDN.

Looks like we have some interesting readers.
Citizen Journalist ran a piece three days ago. Our piece referenced a Fars News report that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was set to meet with members of the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement during his current New York City visit for the UN General Assembly gathering.   See our piece here.
The announcement, which was met by revulsion, even from some supporters of OWS, pushed some in OWS to take to the media to denounce it.  “Nobody in their right mind would meet with a fascist dictator like Ahmadenijad,” said Shawn Carrié, a longtime Occupy activist, in a direct message.
According to NY Magazine,  another spokesperson also denied it.  “No, none,” said Occupy Wall Street spokesperson Dana Balicki when asked by Daily Intel if there was any truth to the report.

Except that in response, Dana Balicki then notes that she, as part of Code Pink (which is one of the groups involved with Occupy), did meet with Ahmadinejad ‘several years ago” (actually 2008).

“I was working with the group CODEPINK several years ago when Ahmadinejad came to [New York] and held a meeting to discuss global issues. I imagine this is the same. We have no idea who is organizing the meeting and how they came up with this story.”

“I’ve been trying to reach someone from Fars to ask them who they are talking about. Anyone going is doing so as an individual,” Balicki said. “There is no organized effort on behalf of OWS to meet with Ahmadinejad. This smells like a propaganda effort to me.”

As we noted in our prior report, Occupy members, most notably, Imam Musa, went to Iran for an Occupy conference over the winter.

They have also had a cosy relationship with Press TV, Iranian government TV, which has promoted them in its media. Press TV is state run, by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB). Its headquarters are located in Tehran, Iran.

Yesterday, Press TV ran an interesting report talking about the alleged visit and alleged meeting with Ahmadinejad. We wouldn’t be linking to it, because we don’t like to link to propaganda, so if you’d like to see it, be our guest, we will quote the relevant parts.

They noted:

Analysts see Iran as “just one example of the connection between OWS movement and the Middle East, which is based on a common enemy, the governments of the United States and Israel”.

This quoted part was taken straight out of our prior article, of course, excerpted and used for their own purposes.

Press TV then goes on:

Occupy protesters stormed an Israeli consulate in Boston on November 2011, waving Palestinian flags and shouting “Long Live the Intifadah!” and “not another nickel, not another dime! No more money for Israel’s crimes”.

Taken from our story, but adding the line “No more money for Israel’s crimes” (which Occupiers did in fact chant).

Participants made clear that they are not anti-Semites, but anti-Zionists, critical of the Israeli government’s current policies.

Well, now, no they didn’t. They never said any such thing. so we’re curious as to how Press TV came to this conclusion. But it makes them sound nicer, so I guess rewriting truth is Press TV’s inclination.

But it’s nice to know that Ahmadinejad can have “journalist” propagandists to help his agenda.

Press TV’s report was then picked up by another propaganda arm, RT (Russia Today) the Kremlin run media outfit. They ran the following, in pertinent part:

Iran’s Press-TV have also picked up the story and quotes unnamed analysts who say Iran is “just one example of the connection between OWS movement and the Middle East, which is based on a common enemy, the governments of the United States and Israel.”

We want to welcome Press TV to our readership. But when you steal our stuff, try to get it right. You may actually learn something.

“Bin Laden” written on embassy sign, militants flying Iraqi flags.  Twitpic from “Anonymous” Mad Darsh

Today, Egyptian protesters climbed the walls of the US Embassy in Cairo, pulled down the American flag, ripping it to shreds, then subsequently burning it. The American flag was replaced with an Al Qaeda flag.

On the wall you can see Guy Fawkes masks the symbol of Anonymous and the Occupy movement. Anonymous was involved in some aspects of the Arab Spring. Occupiers were also involved in organizing in Egypt.  You can also see “A-C-A-B” which is a common radical/Occupy chant meaning “All cops are bastards” and underneath that is “USA”, seemingly a reference to the United States being regarded as a “policeman” in the region. The bottom right corner of the black flags have “AQ”, presumably for Al Qaeda.

There are some reports this started because of a movie viewed as anti-Muslim was produced in the United States.  It is not clear what prompted this particular outcry, although today is September 11. The embassy was given some sort of a warning ahead of time, so personnel was told to stay home.

It is unbelievable but in the face of this, the US Embassy released the following statement:

U.S. Embassy Condemns Religious Incitement

September 11, 2012

The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims – as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others

The White House is disavowing this statement, claiming it was “not cleared” with them. However, the statement of Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State, presumably officially “cleared” starts with almost as much of a disavowal of denigration of religion.

Russia Today (RT) propaganda runs amuck “Your choice couldn’t be any clearer”

Is there any doubt that much of the media is in the tank for the re-election President Obama?

Apparently the Kremlin and Putin are down for more Obama (Remember the “I’ll have more flexibility after the election” comment of Obama’s, and the  “I’ll transmit that to Vladimir” reply?) Listen to this from Thom Hartmann from the “Big Picture” show from Russia Today(RT) .  Russia Today is the Kremlin-funded propaganda arm, reporting in the United States.  It continually attacks the US. But even for them, this went over the line.

Hartmann bashes the RNC, which is presently being held in Tampa. He speaks of  the dream of Dr. King, ” tonight, that dream is a nightmare in Tampa”.

Start listening at ~ 5:10. Transcript is below.

Today we’re in a never-ending “war on terror” promoted by those same people in Tampa that you’ll be hearing more from. In fact, the one voice in the Republican Party that aligns with Dr. King in opposition to war, Ron Paul, has been banned from speaking at the convention. Instead, he’s been replaced by people like John Boehner and Rick Santorum, who want even more war, who believe America’s army is “God’s Army” and should bring democracy to the Middle East through drone strikes, cruise missiles and cluster bombs. America is already too far down those long dark  shameful corridors that those nations that possess power without compassion have walked in the past.

Dr. King’s dream of peace is a nightmare tonight in Tampa Florida. And so, on this night, a half century after King talked about his dream, we should all be aware of the choice in front of us. It’s a choice that, frankly, couldn’t be any clearer. On one side we have the dream or nightmare coming from the RNC. A dream that only the wealthy can be trusted, that minorities are flawed, and that endless war is destined by God. And on the other side, we have the American dream, a dream rooted in equality, economic justice, and lasting peace. The dream handed down to us from the Rev Doctor Martin Luther King. And a dream that our nation can and will achieve, if we just all work at it, and don’t give in to the politics of division that we’re hearing from Tampa. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Of course, not only is Hartmann on the crazy train, but it’s rife with lies.  The truth is that Ron Paul was invited to speak and he turned it down, which he said on Fox News from the convention(yes, he was there). He was clearly still upset about not getting the nomination. The person currently conducting wars and drone strikes is President Obama. There is no basis for any of the other attacks. But why let facts get in the way? If it helps get Obama elected so he can be “more flexible”.

Hartmann is right. Our choice couldn’t be any clearer.

Occupiers storm Obama campaign headquarters in Oakland and Portland, scuffle with staffers (video)

In a coordinated effort (and we leave how coordinated and with whom to your imagination), Occupy Oakland and Occupy Portland stormed Obama campaign headquarters in their respective cities in Oakland, California and Portland, Oregon.  The Occupy group in Oakland was comprised of the far left organizations including Iraq Vets against the War(including Scott Olsen who was injured in October of last year at a protest) and Code Pink. Both groups are active members of Occupy. The headquarters in Oakland still had boarded up windows from Occupy smashing the windows out on August 3.

After members stormed the office in Oakland. they read a formal statement by bullhorn asking President Obama to apologize to Bradley Manning for saying he broke the law,  for better treatment and for a pardon for  Bradley Manning.  Bradley Manning is awaiting trial on charges related to leaking government documents.

Protesters crowd the Oakland office here.

Photos of Code Pink and Iraq Vets Against the War members blocking the doorway in Oakland, Scott Olsen is 4th from the left, with the long blond hair:

After storming the office in Oakland, they got into a scuffle with Obama staffers when Occupiers climbed on top of and over chairs and tried to move further into the working area of the office.

Video taken by Scott Olsen:

Police were called in both locations. See pictures of Portland and in Oakland of police.  A hostage negotiator actually had to be called out in Oakland to talk with seven Occupiers, who refused to leave.  Police lost patience and moved in to make the arrests in Oakland around 9 pm last night. Scott Olsen was the only one of the seven not arrested, as they were given a last opportunity to leave and he left.   Six were arrested in Oakland and five are reported to have been arrested in Portland.

After the arrests in Oakland, other demonstrators marched on the Oakland Police station.

Reports this morning indicate that the people arrested in Oakland have been released already, except for one who will be held over the weekend.

The last time that Obama campaign headquarters faced “occupation” or sit ins was when illegal aliens occupied the offices in some locations in the week prior to President Obama granting amnesty to those who were brought here as children.

And one more time…

Anonymous declares war, again.

They called for revolt yesterday, but just to be clear, today they spelled it out more, that yes, they are calling for people to take up arms and overthrow the government.

Some have speculated that this may be about the fifth call on the people to war against the government.  For some reason, they just don’t seem to be getting the people to respond. Clearly, they think all that was needed was to repeat the call. Maybe people haven’t heard it enough yet.

There is something slightly more interesting in this call, though.

There is a clear outreach within the video to exploit anger and fear about Obama possibly removing guns, about Obamacare and about Obama Executive Orders.

Are they reaching out to the right, to the constitutionalist? It would appear so.

However, they fail to get that a constitutionalist would be the last person to follow them in their continued path to attack anyone who disagrees with them, the antithesis of free speech. Their sole purpose, just like Occupy, is to get folks into the streets, doesn’t matter how or why, just get them out there so they can revolt. Hence the ghoulish ambulance chasing of people upset about issues, like Trayvon Martin and the deaths in Anaheim.

One might have a concern about the growth or reach of the government. But I suspect constitutionalists will not be picking up this call anytime soon.

Julian Assange runs to Ecuadorian embassy in London to escape extradition

Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks,  is currently at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, asking for political asylum.

Ecuador says that it is analyzing his request, although Wikileaks claims already that he is already “under the protection” of the Ecuadorian embassy, according to their Twitter.

According to Russia Today(RT) , the media organ of the Kremlin that employs Assange to do a show, Ecuador previously had offered Assange residency in 2010.

Deputy Foreign Minister Kintto Lucas said his country is “open to giving him [Assange] residency in Ecuador”. Lucas also said Ecuador was “very concerned” by information revealed by Wikileaks linking US diplomats with spying on friendly governments.

Apparently Ecuador is not too concerned about Assange’s alleged spying efforts, including the effort to employ Anonymous to hack Icelandic government email to instigate an uprising in Iceland.  See here.

Assange has been under house arrest in the UK since 2010, after Sweden issued an international arrest warrant over allegations of sexual assault.

Swedish authorities accuse him of raping one woman and sexually molesting and coercing another in August that year, while on a visit to Stockholm to give a lecture.

He recently lost his bid to fight extradition and would likely have been extradited to Sweden, hence the reason for his immediate need to claim “asylum”.  Coincidentally, seemingly, Assange interviewed Ecuadorian president Rafael Correa last month on Assange’s show.

Assange had been out on bond of £200,000 ($315,780), much of which had been raised by supporters. He was supposed to be monitered electronically.

In granting the bond, Overnight Justice Duncan Ouseley stated Assange’s “reputation” would be “diminished” if he fled from extradition proceedings.

“Were he to abscond, he would diminish himself in the eyes of his supporters,” Mr Ouseley said.

Egyptian women marching against sexual assault at protests are assaulted by mob

Fifty women marched in Cairo’s  Tahrir Square on Monday protesting against sexual assaults on women made during protests were attacked by a mob of men.

The AP reports that the women and the group of men that was protecting them were attacked by a mob of hundreds of men who assaulted the women,  the attackers overwhelming the male guardians, then groping and molesting several of the female marchers.

After the marchers entered a crowded corner of the square, a group of men waded into the women, heckling them and groping them. The male supporters tried to fend them off, and it turned into a melee involving a mob of hundreds.

The marchers tried to flee while the attackers chased them and male supporters tried to protect them. But the attackers persisted, cornering several women against a metal sidewalk railing, including an Associated Press reporter, shoving their hands down their clothes and trying to grab their bags. The male supporters fought back, swinging belts and fists and throwing water.

Eventually, the women were able to reach refuge in a nearby building with the mob still outside until they finally got out to safety.

Many thought this to be an organized effort to discourage women from being involved in the demonstrations. Women held a critical role in the pro democracy efforts but have had to face assault from both government and anti government forces.

The AP reports that:

Sexual harassment of women, including against those who wear the Islamic headscarf or even cover their face, is common in the streets of Cairo. A 2008 report by the Egyptian Center for Women’s Rights says two-thirds of women in Egypt experienced sexual harassment on a daily basis. A string of mass assaults on women in 2006 during the Muslim feast following the holy month of Ramadan prompted police to increase the number of patrols to combat it but legislation providing punishment was never passed.

After Friday’s attack, many were already calling for another, much larger stand in the square against such assaults.

Saudi woman hero tells off “religious police”

Lot of talk about what constitutes a “hero” of late.

Sometimes, wearing nail polish can make you a hero.

This kick butt woman is my new hero.

Listen as she tells the Saudi “religious police” to get out of her face as they harass her for wearing nail polish.  This could get her killed even though, as she notes, the government is supposed to protect her rights.

New Book: Assange solicited Anonymous group to hack Icelandic government sites, instigate uprising

For those of us who follow Anonymous, Wikileaks and Occupy, the connections between the three are not news.  We’ve been watching the connections for a long time.

Finally, however, Julian Assange will be called out very publicly on at least one of his less than savory actions to more than just the Anon/Wikileaks/Occupy watchers.

Parmy Olson, who has been writing on Assange, Wikileaks and Anonymous for Forbes for some time, is coming out with a new book, “We Are Anonymous”.  Olson as a longtime watcher will likely have many interesting observations. In one of the most interesting so far, Olson details Assange meeting online with Lulz Sec.

Lulz Sec was a small hacking group, a part of Anonymous, who had been involved in multiple hacks against government and corporate websites. These efforts included stealing credit card information as well as government and business information which they later leaked onto the internet.

After Lulz Sec attacked the website,  Assange posted a supporting tweet on twitter, according to Olson. He later deleted the tweet, but reached out to Lulz Sec privately. He and a Wikileaks staff member known as “q” met in an IRC channel with Topiary and Sabu of Lulz Sec.

At first, Topiary was nervous. Here was Julian Assange himself, the founder of Wikileaks,  reaching out to his team. He couldn’t think why he wanted to talk to them.  Then he noticed what q and Assange were saying. They were praising Lulz Sec for its work, adding they had laughed at the DDOS(distributed denial of service) attack on the CIA. With all the flattery it almost felt like they were nervous.

Sabu told Assange that his crew was up for taking out “traditional government targets”.

Q went on to explain why he and Assange were reaching out to Lulz Sec-they wanted help infiltrating certain government and corporate websites in Iceland.  They had reasons for wanting retribution on Iceland:

A young Wikileaks member had recently gone to Iceland and been arrested. Wikileaks had also been bidding for access to a data center in an underground bunker but had lost out to another corporate bidder after the government denied them the space.  Another journalist who supoorted Wikileaks was being held by authorities.  Assange and q appeared to want Lulz Sec to to try to grab the e-mail service of government sites then look for evidence of corruption or at least evidence that the government was unfairly targeting Wikileaks. The picture they were trying to paint was of the Icelandic government trying to suppress Wikileaks’ freedom to spread information.  If they could leak such information, they explained, it could help instigate an uprising in Iceland and beyond.

This was not a deal out the goodness offered without exchange. Q was offering to give Lulz Sec a spreadsheet of classified government data, a file called RSA 128, which was encrypted and needed to be cracked.  Q explained they had computers at MIT working on it for two weeks but hadn’t cracked it yet.

Topiary confessed to Assange that they had been behind the HB Gary hack, which thereafter resulted in a leak of 75,000 emails, including personal emails.  Assange told them they could have structured the leak better.

Topiary and Sabu invited the Wikileaks pair over to Sabu’s server and created a channel for them. Q said he wished they could help the group more obviously with things like servers but that they didn’t want to link Wikileaks too obviously to Lulz Sec.  The team received  links to 2 government websites and one company website to the rest of the team for which they were to   find ways to get into their networks and grab their emails.

What Assange didn’t know was that Sabu, by this point, was working with the FBI as an informant and likely all this was being monitored.

As we remember..

Massive cyber attack discovered- “Flame”

Excerpted from BBC-

A complex targeted cyber-attack that collected private data from countries such as Israel and Iran has been uncovered, researchers have said.

Russian security firm Kaspersky Labs told the BBC they believed the malware, known as Flame, had been operating since August 2010.  The company said it believed the attack was state-sponsored, but could not be sure of its exact origins. They described Flame as “one of the most complex threats ever discovered”.  Research into the attack was carried out in conjunction with the UN’s International Telecommunication Union.  They had been investigating another malware threat, known as Wiper, wihch was reportedly deleting data on machines in western Asia.

In the past, targeted malware – such as Stuxnet – has targeted nuclear infrastructure in Iran.  Others like Duqu have sought to infiltrate networks in order to steal data.

This new threat appears not to cause physical damage, but to collect huge amounts of sensitive information, said Kaspersky’s chief malware expert Vitaly Kamluk.  “Once a system is infected, Flame begins a complex set of operations, including sniffing the network traffic, taking screenshots, recording audio conversations, intercepting the keyboard, and so on,” he said.  More than 600 specific targets were hit, Mr Kamluk said, ranging from individuals, businesses, academic institutions and government systems.

Iran’s National Computer Emergency Response Team posted a security alert stating that it believed Flame was responsible for “recent incidents of mass data loss” in the country.

The malware code itself is 20MB in size – making it some 20 times larger than the Stuxnet virus. The researchers said it could take several years to analyse.

Iran and Israel

Mr Kamluk said the size and sophistication of Flame suggested it was not the work of independent cybercriminals, and more likely to be government-backed.  He explained: “Currently there are three known classes of players who develop malware and spyware: hacktivists, cybercriminals and nation states.  Flame is not designed to steal money from bank accounts. It is also different from rather simple hack tools and malware used by the hacktivists. So by excluding cybercriminals and hacktivists, we come to conclusion that it most likely belongs to the third group.”

Among the countries affected by the attack are Iran, Israel, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

“The geography of the targets and also the complexity of the threat leaves no doubt about it being a nation-state that sponsored the research that went into it,” Mr Kamluk said.

The malware is capable of recording audio via a microphone, before compressing it and sending it back to the attacker.  It is also able to take screenshots of on-screen activity, automatically detecting when “interesting” programs – such as email or instant messaging – were open.

‘Industrial vacuum cleaner’

Kaspersky’s first recorded instance of Flame is in August 2010, although it said it is highly likely to have been operating earlier.  Prof Alan Woodward, from the Department of Computing at the University of Surrey said the attack is very significant.

“This is basically an industrial vacuum cleaner for sensitive information,” he told the BBC.  He explained that unlike Stuxnet, which was designed with one specific task in mind, Flame was much more sophisticated.  “Whereas Stuxnet just had one purpose in life, Flame is a toolkit, so they can go after just about everything they can get their hands on.”

Once the initial Flame malware has infected a machine, additional modules can be added to perform specific tasks – almost in the same manner as adding apps to a smartphone.

According to Prof. Woodward:

This is an extremely advanced attack. It is more like a toolkit for compiling different code based weapons than a single tool. It can steal everything from the keys you are pressing to what is on your screen to what is being said near the machine.

It also has some very unusual data stealing features including reaching out to any Bluetooth enabled device nearby to see what it can steal.

Just like Stuxnet, this malware can spread by USB stick, i.e. it doesn’t need to be connected to a network, although it has that capability as well.

This wasn’t written by some spotty teenager in his/her bedroom. It is large, complicated and dedicated to stealing data whilst remaining hidden for a long time.

Dalai Lama: Poison plot by China to kill me

In an exclusive interview with the Telegraph, the Dalai Lama revealed he had been given reports that Chinese agents trained Tibetan women to poison him while posing as adherents seeking his blessing. The nature of the attack was to come through a contact poison that the women might have in the hair or on their scarves.

The Dalai Lama lives in a temple in a high security area in Dharamsala, India.

The Dalai Lama also stated that there was suspicion of Chinese interference in the finding of his reincarnation(who would then take over after the Dalai Lama’s death). If the correct person is prevented from ascending after him, it could make him the last Dalai Lama, giving China free rein over Tibet.

Relations between China and the Dalai Lama and Tibetan Buddhists have been strained at best.  There have been 30 self immolations in the last year by Tibetans in protest against Chinese attempts to destroy Tibetan culture and religious adherence. While there have been reports of protests, Chinese soldiers are reported to be everywhere to prevent a rebellion.

Chen’s nephew arrested allegedly in reprisal for his escape

According to ChinaAid Association, a  US-based human rights group, Chen Kegui,  the nephew of Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng, has been arrested on suspicion of murder. It says the arrest was made in revenge for Chen Guangcheng’s actions.

The arrest took place in Shandong Province on Wednesday. The nephew’s lawyer told the group that the nephew wounded 3 intruders at his home after noticing his parents had been beaten. More than 20 people who were allegedly local officials invaded the home following Chen’s escape from house arrest.

According to NHK World:

The group says if convicted, Chen’s nephew could face the death penalty. It says the arrest is a reprisal against his uncle and that a fair trial cannot be expected. It condemns Shandong authorities and urges the United States and other countries to press China on the matter.

The blind activist told NHK by telephone that he had been informed of his nephew’s arrest by his mother in Shandong Province, adding that his brother is also being threatened. Hesaid he wants to appeal through the media for their safety.

The US government said on Thursday that it had conveyed its concern to Chinese authorities about reports of the arrest of Chen’s nephew.  The Chinese government has not issued any comment.

According to Reuters:

Chen, who is now receiving treatment in a Beijing hospital and preparing to go to the United States to study, said his nephew was a scapegoat of officials angered by Chen’s audacious escape and demands that they be investigated.

Asked why police in his home province of Shandong in east China would arrest his nephew, Chen said, “Revenge.”

“I think this is revenge gone wild, and it’s their final battle,” he told Reuters by telephone from the Beijing hospital where he is being kept.

Citing descriptions from relatives, Chen said his nephew acted in self-defense, picking up a kitchen cleaver after police and guards stormed into the home of Chen’s older brother, where he was staying, after midnight.

“They beat him savagely,” Chen said of his nephew. “He was beaten so badly that his face was covered in blood. I heard he was beaten so badly that three hours later his face was still bleeding,” Chen said,

Jihadi Jumpkick

Via The Jawa Report is this morning’s comedy gold.

Meet Tarek Maaroufi, a  member of the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria who served three years for terror involvement in Belgium.  He is a serious terrorist. But as Jawa notes, we’re not really sure what the heck he is doing here.  But whatever it is, it must be cool.  Because he posted it to Facebook.

See if you can figure out what he is doing here

Apparently Tarek’s website had a small problem and went off line courtesy of anti Jihadist hacker th3j35t3r.

Moral of the story? If you’re a terrorist, don’t post things that make people giggle on Facebook.
