Occupier arrested for bank robbery in PA (Updated)

Dave Gorczynski being arrested

Sometimes it really is not a good idea to take a “You are being robbed” sign into a bank.

Dave Gorczynski who is allegedly part of Occupy Easton (Pennsylvania) went into a bank in Easton with just such a sign, as well as another sign apparently saying, “Give a man a gun, he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, he can rob a country,” . It is not entirely clear what went on in the bank while he was there, but apparently a bank employee hit a panic alarm reporting a bank robbery in progress.

Police arrived and placed Gorczynski under arrrest, charging him with attempted robbery, terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.

Other Occupiers have claimed that he was merely protesting, and have raised 10 % of his $10,000 bail and bailed him out.

Friends and family of Gorczynski demonstrated outside the Easton Police Department after his arrest, calling the charges excessive.

The district attorney said he would be scrutinizing the legality of the charges, indicating he is a strong supporter of First Amendment rights.

UPDATE:

The district attorney has, as predicted, dropped the charge of attempted robbery. However, the disorderly persons and terroristic threat charges remain.

“Terroristic threat” is a common charge  made when one person threatens another. It has nothing to do with any actual real terrorism.

Here is a picture of what he looked like going into the bank with the sign:

What is going on here? Why was this guy arrested anyhow? We were told by the Obama administration that Occupiers were “off limits” for the police departments and they could do “anything they wanted to”.

    • Apparently the local police and the bank teller didn’t get the memo. 🙂
But actually, I predict that the charges will be kicked down.

I kinda agree with the give a man a bank and he can rob a country. The cops over reacted. He has no gun or weapon, implied or otherwise, there’s no armed robbery. No demand for money, no armed robbery. The is absolutely no domestic terrorism, but get used to that one folks. There is a disorderly conduct. You don’t yell fire, remember?

    • The guy carried a sign into a bank that said, “Give a man a gun, he can rob a bank,” and you think the police over-reacted by arresting him? You’re correct that he probably won’t be charged with a bank robbery, but there was no over-reaction by authorities.

It’s not up to the bank employees or even the police to decipher his motives when he brings a sign into the bank describing a gun and robberies.

    • He was not charged with armed robbery, but with ‘attempted robbery”.

It is not clear what he said while in the bank, so I don’t think we can comment on fear/threat that bank employees may have felt, in addition to sign.

“Terroristic threat” is a charge that has nothing to do with terrorism. It is a common charge in many states that applies to threats made-nothing to do with terrorism proper.

Irwin Mann you’re getting rob by the banks and either don’t realize it or don’t care which makes you the moron!

Everyone should not only be supporting this guy, but should be doing the same thing because the government can’t lock up everybody and maybe then the government will represent the people instead of the criminal bankers.
